Question: How do I break a bad habit?

I have a really bad habit of biting my lips, like chewing the skin off. I've tried to stop on my own. I’ve tried
numerous products that are supposed to help, but it doesn't. I would really like to stop, cause my lips
bleed a lot and sometimes they swell up so bad I can barely talk, let alone smile or do any thing else.
Is there something you would recommend for my problem?

Answer
You sound like you might have the kind of habit that could be best treated with behavior modification. I'm
not a doctor or a psychologist and I'm not qualified to give any medical referrals, but I have a sister who,
when she was young, had a similar tic: she would suck on her lower lip until it was chapped and raw and
painful. She was treated with weekly sessions with a psychologist who talked to her about her habit, plus
there was some kind of nasty-tasting lotion that was put on her lip once a day. I don't know what went on
with the psychologist because it was private, but I remember that it took less than 8 or 10 weeks to break
my sister's habit. Your family doctor can probably give you a referral to a behavior psychologist who could
help you.

(Today, by the way, my sister is happily married with a lovely smile.)

Good luck, and thank you for visiting my website.
